Hot Water Cylinder Upgrade for Economy 7 & Better Hot Water Pressure
Another hot water system upgrade completed by Willow Plumbing Services, transforming an older cylinder installation into a much cleaner and more practical setup.
For this customer, simply replacing the hot water cylinder wasn’t enough. They wanted to take advantage of an Economy 7 electricity tariff, while also improving the poor hot water pressure throughout the property.
Why was the hot water cylinder replaced?
The existing hot water cylinder was ageing and the customer wanted their hot water system configured so they could make better use of off-peak electricity through Economy 7.
Economy 7 provides a lower electricity rate during set overnight hours, depending on the customer’s energy supplier and tariff.
To make better use of this, the new cylinder was selected with two immersion heater positions.
The lower immersion can heat a larger volume of water during the cheaper off-peak period, while the second immersion can be used as a convenient boost when additional hot water is required.
This gives the customer much more control over when their hot water is heated.
Improving Low Hot Water Pressure
The second part of this installation involved addressing the customer’s poor hot water pressure.
The existing system was gravity-fed, which can sometimes result in disappointing pressure at taps and showers depending on the layout and available head of water.
As part of the cylinder upgrade, we adapted the existing pipework and installed a suitable pump to improve the hot water delivery around the property.
This required alterations to the existing copper pipework so the new cylinder and pump could be incorporated neatly into the system.
The result is a system which provides the customer with:
A new insulated hot water cylinder
Two immersion heaters suitable for their Economy 7 setup
The ability to heat water using cheaper off-peak electricity
A separate boost option when required
Improved hot water pressure
Modified and upgraded copper pipework
A much cleaner and more organised cylinder installation
Before & After
The difference can clearly be seen in the before-and-after photos.
The original cupboard contained an older cylinder with a mixture of pipework running throughout the space.
Following the upgrade, the new cylinder has been installed with the associated copper pipework altered and a pump incorporated into the hot water system.
It’s a good example of how upgrading a cylinder can be used as an opportunity to improve the overall performance and usability of the hot water system, rather than simply swapping an old cylinder for a new one.
